Neil Vertigan
(1927-2008), Ulverstone, Tasmania
Neil has become respected as one of Australia’s foremost box makers following a career in the Department of Education. More recently he has enjoyed success in designing and making caravans that has satisfied his need to challenge the norm. His almost full time box making commenced in 1977 and his work has graced many of Australia’s international contacts. He was recognised a Craftsman of the Year by the Craft Council of Tasmania in 1983. Neil Vertigan completed an Arts Degree at the University of Tasmania, where he also obtained a Diploma in Public Administration and was awarded the B.J Thompson Prize. As a Fulbright Scholar, Vertigan studied Science, Technology and Vocational Education in the USA. His interest in wood design saw him complete a 5 year Cabinet Making Indenture as well as a 4 year Carpentry and Joiner Certificate through TAFE.
