Mark Bishop
(b.1965–), London, UK
Bishop began working with timber in 1983, when he was selected as one of only four students to study a Diploma of fine furniture at the Canberra School of Art, under the late George Ingham. In 1997 Bishop was artist in residence at the internationally renowned Wood Turning School in Philadelphia, USA, where he honed and perfected his impressive skills. Bishop has exhibited widely and is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas. He currently produces furniture, turned bowls and a range of business card holders from his workshop in Stanley, an historic coastal settlement in the north-west of Tasmania. Bishop mills his own timber nearby.
"I am definitely influenced by my environment. If the environment you live in becomes irrelevant, then you’re dead as an artist no matter where you live. You shouldn’t fight it."
