NEIL VERTIGAN, BOXES, 1995
BLACK HEART SASSAFRAS, BRASS
90(H) x 185(D) x 285(L) mm
Neil has embraced the unique, naturally occurring patterning of the Black Heart Sassafras and constructed the boxes using matching pieces of veneer, that create a feeling of unity and companionship. The similarly patterned veneers alter the visual relationship between the boxes depending upon their placement in relation to each other. This attention to detail is an aspect of Neil’s design process that has contributed to his much deserved and respected reputation as one of Australia’s leading box makers.
“For the tops of the two boxes, I split a piece of sassafras. If you look at it, the pattern looks like the head and trunk of an elephant – so the two box lids show two elephants trunk-to-trunk.“
Neil has become respected as one of Australia’s foremost box makers following a career in the Department of Education. More recently he has enjoyed success in designing and making caravans that has satisfied his need to challenge the norm. His almost full time box making commenced in 1977 and his work has graced many of Australia’s international contacts. He was recognised a Craftsman of the Year by the Craft Council of Tasmania in 1983.
