PETER GORRING, TWO BOXES, 1991
HUON PINE, CELERY TOP PINE, BLACKHEART SASSAFRAS, FELT, BRASS
30 (H) x 140 (W) x 90 (D) mm
The boxes Peter creates are intended as personal items to protect individual possessions. The boxes are always unique, as Peter allows himself to be guided by the complexities and characteristics of the particular piece of timber or veneer he is working with. His thorough understanding of the timbers he works with coupled with his fine craftsmanship ensures a product of value and beauty as well as being highly functional.
Peter grew up in New South Wales and spent much of his childhood in his father’s woodworking business where he was taught about the design and manufacture of timber products. He furthered his education at Maitland Technical College where he studied carpentry and joinery. After completing his training Peter founded Australian Woodwork, his very own box making business.
Peter’s design philosophy stems from the vast amount of time he has spent in the bush, where he contemplates trees and the abundant possibilities surrounding nature and its configurations.
“To me it is beautiful, growing, so I try and keep it alive in its simple and individual way.”
