STEVE REID, TALLBOY, 1995
SASSAFRAS, PERFORATED ALUMINIUM
1200(H) x 1000(W) x 500(D)mm
Drawing from simple architectural form, Reid’s chest of drawers is a translation of the breezy transitional space of a screened verandah. The lightness of perforated steel frames the contrasting, warm sassafras of the elegantly proportioned chest. Reid’s Tallboy demonstrates an aesthetic of minimal design and attention to detail.
Reid has a vast and varied background and his experience includes fitter and turner, skydiving instructor, silversmith, engineer, film (props and special effects), furniture design and industrial design. In 1996 Reid won the City of Hobart Art Prize for Furniture. Now based in Sydney, he works as an engineering technician for Big Kahuna Imagineering, a multi-discipline creative workshop.
